Editorial 4

Editorial 4 is a concept that I have a deep personal connection too. This editorial is “inspired” by my Binge eating disorder from the ages of 14-17. I think this is one of the editorials in my Zine that actually has a story. It’s about a girl’s complicated relationship with food. The layout of the pictures are a mini journey of the model spiraling out of control while trying to punctually eat cake. I dressed the model up in a 60’s inspired attire. She’s wearing a skin tight dress with a matching headband. I wanted the model to look like a sexualised child as that’s how I felt growing up since I was an early bloomer. The skin tight dress is also supposed to imply body dysmorphia and how that’s connected to my complicated relationship with food. This editorial is pretty interesting because not only does the model goes into these stages of eating cake but i asked the makeup artist to do 3 different looks that shows her slowly spiraling into complete insanity. This blog will go more in depth into that progression. Here is the Moodboard of the shoot. I would just like to make it clear that these pictures will be posted on the zine unedited. I want the pictures to be raw and there is already a lot going on the the editorials so I don’t want to edit them and make it look extra. We took over 900 pictures trying to show these stages.

This shoot has some 60’s inspired themes with the background and the models makeup. I used a picnic plastic blanket as the background in my kitchen and jus a regular green chair since i felt like there would be good contrast.

Stage One: Punctuality

The first stage is supposed to be a clean almost doll-like look. i asked the makeup artist to give the model a doll-like face. High winged liner, pink undertones on the eye, excessive blush. I asked the model to pose in a very punctual way. She’s self conscious but starving. it’s as if 100 people are watching her eat so she’s trying to be as neat possible but her expressions show a sense of paranoia and anxiousness. She’s well behaved but inside she’s paranoid. The fear of people watching her eat. She needs to feminine, well behaved and disciplined.

Stage 2: Slip up

Stage 2 is slipping up. The model is taking bigger bites of her cake instead of small bites. I asked the makeup artist to add more onto the makeup she already had on. Her makeup displays obvious sadness. Her doll like look is slowly fading away being replaced with black tear-drops. Her demeanor is also slowly changing. She’s not sitting with her legs together anymore she’s crossing her legs, she doesn’t care about her dress rising up or her top coming down. She’s starving. The cake is all that matters.

Her doll-like makeup is pretty much gone. I asked the model to make her eye makeup messier as if she cried a ton. Her demeanor is slowly turning animalistic. She lost the fork and is using her bare hands picking apart the cake slowly. She’s slowly throwing a temper tantrum. Tired of being perfect, tired of being judged tired of being stared at.

This is the peak of one Spiralling out of control. Her makeup is supposed to be scary, she doesn’t care about the state of the cake or how she looks. Her emotions are all over the place as upset as she is she got that satisfaction of finishing her food the way she wants. She has spiraled out of control but it’s the most freeing she’s felt.

here are some of the test shots. We took a total of 934 pictures but here are some of the shots.
